This was the first of them, named for the poem I lived in that year, Henley's Invictus, which is written straight into the shelves. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt rewards looking, because it holds the others. Hung small on its shelves are Still Falling, The Watcher, Making Light and Spoor; the framed dot panel marked O Nata Lux is Prima Materia. Worked in among the bottles as objects, not pictures, are the bowl from Kintsugi and the waking monks of Before the Bell. There is sheet music in it too, Monteverdi's Duo Seraphim, a piece especially dear to me. The whole Henley poem is written in among the labelled bottles: peace, breath, stardust, colour. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA calm woman in deep sun-orange, a textile in her hair, sits near the top. I am in it too, on the right, with short hair. And somewhere a black cat is hiding, the way one hides in every painting I make.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is painted on black in watercolour, and parts of the surface are crazed to break like glass, a gum-arabic method I worked out myself. The colour is everything I owned that year, turned all the way up against the dark, because the dark is what lets the colour be seen. The original is 22 centimetres square, which makes each of those paintings-within smaller than a fingernail. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe other cabinets feel alive. This one is still, a single year held like a photograph. An archival fine art print. Each of these cabinets records a single year, and it is filled with the work from that year, shrunk down and set inside. This is the green one, the happiest year I have had: the lower shelves are ordered, outlined, every bottle labelled, and the green comes in from above and spreads down over them until the cabinet disappears under it. Dead centre, as a cutout, sits the cabinet from the year before, the dark one, still to join the collection. A calm woman in blue with leaves in her hair sits in the middle, and around her are bees, mountains, and the real mushrooms I picked in Austria that year. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe greens are watercolour bound in honey and gum arabic, the same paint the Impressionists used; where they let it dissolve into light, I keep it dense and draw into every inch. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe original is 27 centimetres square, a whole year set onto it, and it keeps giving the longer you look. I have looked at it every day since I painted it and still find things I did not remember were there. The cabinet is still under there, the same order and structure, but the growth has covered it completely, and not being able to find it is the point. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is about the one thing nature always does, which is grow and cover everything. Nothing in it is fixed. Where the first cabinet holds a year perfectly still, this one will not hold still at all; it feels as though it could grow overnight and be different by morning. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe whole picture is green, every value from near-black to the freshest light green, and it breathes at a single point: the warm peach-red rose at the centre, where the eye lands. It was painted by dropping pigment into water and letting it move, lifting some leaves out with the corner of a tissue, dropping water back into others so they dried with hard edges, the highlights pulled up in white gouache. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLook for the insects, ten of them in all. The lacewing and the leaf insect were here, in the garden, before I ever lifted them out onto white as Specimens, and there are bees among them. On the 17-centimetre-square original the smallest are under 5 millimetres, so finding all ten takes a slow eye. Everything else the cabinets are full of is in here too, the quotes and the pictures-within-pictures, but grown over and out of sight. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is the one you do not have to read. The others are years to read; this is a hideaway you sit inside, green all around, sunlight through the leaves, the insects moving. It is full of small treasures, the kind that are valuable only because you found them, the way a rock you picked up as a child was the best thing you owned that year. They are mine, but they are finds, not memories. These are just mushrooms. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe whole green background is not a wash but hundreds of separate leaves, each with its own edge, and I painted them last, after the picture was finished and unfixed. One drop too much water at any edge would have bled the whole thing into mud with no way back, so every leaf was a steady-handed risk laid up against the next. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a lot to find. The black cat sits near the centre, the easiest place in any of my paintings to learn to spot it. A family of forest folk gather, two big and three small with a bee above their heads; three of the Before the Bell monks have come to sit on the mushrooms; the calm woman returns, this time in red; and there is a younger, smaller me tucked in too, along with the music I love and a line of the Tao. The peach-red rose from Green Lush is painted into the background, the surest sign anywhere in the shop that two of these paintings are a pair. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe colour is a bright, fresh light green I had not used before, and it does the work of the painting: it closes the space around you until you feel you are sitting somewhere small and new. It is less a picture to read than a place to go, a green hideaway on the wall to climb into when you want somewhere fresh and safe. The technique began here, the colours began here, and I have never stopped, there is always one of these going somewhere, on my wall or in a drawer, always in different colours. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is built from thousands of dots, each placed by hand, the whole field of them on an original just 15 centimetres square. I drop a bubble of clean water, let pigment into it, then pull some back out with a tissue or leave it to dry on its own, and it dries differently every time. I decide how big the bubble is and where its edge falls, but not what the colour does inside it, and that is the whole point: I hold the edges and let go of the middle. A river of bare paper winds through the field where I left the paper to breathe.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat it gives you is the concentration that went into it. No one needs to be told how much time and attention thousands of hand-dropped dots take; you feel it in front of the painting, and it slows you to meet it. It is a surface that asks for your attention and gives it back. It is the flow itself. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt surfaces all over the shop. The panel marked O Nata Lux inside Invictus is one of these; so are the dot fields in Green Cabinet; Spoor is painted in the same language; even the rose at the heart of Green Lush carries these colours. The monks are seated on the steps of a temple at night, in meditation. The bell is the one that will ring to end it and call them back into time. This is the moment just before it, time suspended, no one moving yet. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRead along the steps and you can watch it happen: each monk is at a different state of awakening, the nearest one deepest in meditation, the farthest one fully awake. The colour carries it too, a colour perspective, the robes cool and purple up close, warming as they rise toward the temple. Above them, the temple is built from thousands of fine ink dots.
