This was the first of them, named for the poem I lived in that year, Henley's Invictus, which is written straight into the shelves. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt rewards looking, because it holds the others. Hung small on its shelves are Still Falling, The Watcher, Making Light and Spoor; the framed dot panel marked O Nata Lux is Prima Materia. Worked in among the bottles as objects, not pictures, are the bowl from Kintsugi and the waking monks of Before the Bell. There is sheet music in it too, Monteverdi's Duo Seraphim, a piece especially dear to me. The whole Henley poem is written in among the labelled bottles: peace, breath, stardust, colour. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA calm woman in deep sun-orange, a textile in her hair, sits near the top. I am in it too, on the right, with short hair. And somewhere a black cat is hiding, the way one hides in every painting I make.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is painted on black in watercolour, and parts of the surface are crazed to break like glass, a gum-arabic method I worked out myself. The colour is everything I owned that year, turned all the way up against the dark, because the dark is what lets the colour be seen. The original is 22 centimetres square, which makes each of those paintings-within smaller than a fingernail. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe other cabinets feel alive. This one is still, a single year held like a photograph. Nothing in it is fixed. Where the first cabinet holds a year perfectly still, this one will not hold still at all; it feels as though it could grow overnight and be different by morning. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe whole picture is green, every value from near-black to the freshest light green, and it breathes at a single point: the warm peach-red rose at the centre, where the eye lands. It was painted by dropping pigment into water and letting it move, lifting some leaves out with the corner of a tissue, dropping water back into others so they dried with hard edges, the highlights pulled up in white gouache. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLook for the insects, ten of them in all. The lacewing and the leaf insect were here, in the garden, before I ever lifted them out onto white as Specimens, and there are bees among them. On the 17-centimetre-square original the smallest are under 5 millimetres, so finding all ten takes a slow eye. Everything else the cabinets are full of is in here too, the quotes and the pictures-within-pictures, but grown over and out of sight. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is the one you do not have to read. I never trained, I work from what I see, and for this I let go of a single medium and reached for four at once by feel: watercolour, white gouache, coloured pencil, and pearlescent oil pastel for the wings. I painted it from life, kneeling in my garden with real bees in the air, the females out working and the drones idling around the hive. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGet close to the hairs, the pollen caught on the legs, the light bending across the wing. Nothing tells you a hand did this except the work itself, every hair of it painted on an original of about twelve to thirteen centimetres. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eLiving with a bee is a quiet, daily way of honouring the thing that builds most of what we eat. A hive is less a swarm than a single organism made of thousands, one that renews itself and never quite dies. This one I planned, every part of it, around a Hungarian phrase: időtlen időbeli, temporarily timeless, a paradox held in a single breath, outside time for a moment while still inside it. The monks are seated on the steps of a temple at night, in meditation. The bell is the one that will ring to end it and call them back into time. This is the moment just before it, time suspended, no one moving yet. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRead along the steps and you can watch it happen: each monk is at a different state of awakening, the nearest one deepest in meditation, the farthest one fully awake. The colour carries it too, a colour perspective, the robes cool and purple up close, warming as they rise toward the temple. Above them, the temple is built from thousands of fine ink dots.
