A figure inside a glowing bulb, eyes closed, coming apart into falling light.
A small surreal narrative in watercolour and ink, as an archival fine art print.
Inside the bulb a figure stands with her eyes closed and her hands open, her body dissolving into a stream of fine particles that fall.
I painted the original at just 6 by 10 centimetres, small enough to sit in my palm.
I made it from a feeling I could not put into words, so I did not give it a title. I asked everyone around me what they saw, and they gave it a dozen names, every one of them true. Incandescent. Hope. Ruminescence. One more wish. Remember to recharge your light. We all shine on. A few saw something fiercer in it, an idea squeezed while its maker is held back. None of those was my reason for painting it. All of them were right.
That is what these small narratives are for. I paint a feeling I have no words for, and then I hand it over, so I am not going to tell you what this one means. What do you see? Whatever you find, it is yours, and you will not be the first to be sure of it.
