A girl in the dark, and the only light in the painting is the one she is making.

An archival fine art print of a small, luminous narrative in watercolour and ink.

She has wild, spiralling curls and a lavender dress, and she holds a camera up to her eye. From its lens she casts a warm, starry beam out into the black, full of orange light and white points like a small galaxy, and that beam is the only light in the painting. Eyes watch from the dark at the edges. She is not looking at them. She is looking through the camera, at the light she is making.

The original is just 6 by 10 centimetres, the dark and the beam and the girl all on something the size of a card.

It is the first of these small narratives, and the closest thing I have to a self-portrait of how I work. When the world feels dark and watchful, you make your own light, and you point it at the beauty. The looking itself, the search for something worth seeing, is the light.

Making light, both ways: making it, and making light of the dark so it does not get the last word. Where you point it from here is up to you.

Printed to order on Hahnemühle German Etching, a heavyweight 310gsm mould-made fine art paper, acid- and lignin-free to museum standard, with archival pigment inks. A giclée from an original watercolour by Léna Ruisz, never a mass reproduction, colour-managed to stay true to the original painting. Because every screen shows colour a little differently, what you see on your device may vary slightly from the finished print. Free worldwide shipping, arriving ready to live with. No frame is forced on you, so choose the size that fits your wall.

You are buying the fine art print only. The frame shown in the product image, and any mount, furniture, plants or other props in the photographs, are there to show scale and setting. They are not included in your purchase.
