They sit close together on the terrace, which reaches out over the hillside, the little house behind them with smoke curling from its chimney, the moon huge and white and the stars out. The hills fall away below in a quilt of colour, teal and green and plum, and pale roads wind and fork down through them, somewhere to go in every direction. The original is just 6 by 5 centimetres, the most intimate scale I work at.

The feeling is trust. Its other name is Somebody Is Home, and that is the feeling too: the light on, the fire lit, someone there, no one left alone with the night.

All those roads lead away. The painting is the moment of not taking any of them.
